This fine monument,erected to the memory of J.W.W. Birch, the first British Resident of Perak, assassinated in 1875, servers as a reminder of the phenomenally rapid progress which has been made in Malaya. Today the country is contented a peaceful , and our relations with the Malays might well serve as a model.
