Mahathir Mohamad's Birthplace

In 20th December 1925, Y.B Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, the fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia was born at house no. 18, Lorong Kilang Ais, Alor Star, Kedah. The house with nipah roof was purchased by his father, Mohamad bin Iskandar from a seller who was willing to organize his daughter's wedding. A that time, the house was not painted and had only one room with a verandah at the front side but had no stairs. The house shows Tun Dr. Mahathir in his early childhood.

Here he was raised until he got married. Eventhough his was moving into his new house in Titi Gajah, he still keeps on visiting the house to see his parents.

The project of repairing the Born House of Mahathir Mohamad was recommended by Kedah Museum Board. In its meeting on 21st August 2006, the board has suggested that National Archives to be responsible in taking over and preserving the house under the Prime Minister Archives project. Kedah Museum Board has obtained a written approval from Y.A.B Dato Seri Dr. Mahathir and his relatives via a letter dated 29th June 1990 to repair the house for the purpose of preserving the house. The house was obtained by National Archives in May 1993. The efforts in repairing and renovating the house were to protect the valuable and historical place from being extinct.
