The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and Prince William, who represented Queen Elizabeth II to the the Federation of Malaya Independence ceremony, arrived in Kuala Lumpur on 29 August 1957. The Duke of Gloucester, represented Her Majesty the Queen to present the Instrument of Independence for Malaya, to be proclaimed on 31 August 1957.The arrival of the Royal British guests was welcomed by the British officials, the Malay Rulers as well as more than 1,000 people who had waited for the arrival of the entourage at the Kuala Lumpur Airport, including YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, the future Prime Minister of the Independent Federation of Malaya.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester arrived at the Merdeka Stadium for the Proclamation of the Federation of Malaya Independence ceremony on 31 August 1957.
