FRIM (FOREST RESEARCH INSTITUTE MALAYSIA)

The Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) is the one of the leading institutions in tropical forestry research in the world. It is the government funded effort to accomplish research into the sustainable management of the country’s forest resources. Founded by British colonial forest scientist in 1929, the former Forest Research Institute with Dr F.W. Foxworthy as its first chief research officer, became a statutory body governed by the Malaysia Forestry Research and Development Board under the Ministry of Primary Industries in 1985 and then in 2004, FRIM became a statutory body governed under Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.Currently, there are 600 workers conducting forestry research and more than 150 of them are scientist. FRIM offers a back-to-nature experience and the remains of an old Orang Asli settlement. The waterfall and river cutting through this forest reserve adds serenity to this luxurious landscape. FRIM has provided the opportunities for visitors to learn more about the forest and at the same time relax and refresh body with unpolluted environment.

FRIM promotes sustainable management and optimal use of forest resources by generating knowledge and technology through research, development and application. FRIM's wide-ranging expertise, award-winning research and international collaborations have earned the Institute a name for itself in tropical forestry.Among the services provided by the Institute are the arboreta which serves as reference for forestry education, a herbarium established in 1908 with over 200,000 specimens, training courses from landscaping to wood identification, rattan and bamboo product manufacture, a nursery, library and venues for local and international conferences.

The Institute also offers a wide range of facilities for research, including managing six field research stations in areas of different forest types in various parts of the country.FRIM's (forest tour packages) provide opportunities for outdoor recreation and public education in its grounds. It is a popular spot for picnickers, joggers, cyclers, tourists and nature study groups, for family day events, treasure hunts, camping, birdwatching, jungle trekking and nature photography. The grounds, which began as degraded land in the form of sterile mining pools, scrubby wasteland and barren vegetable farms, long-abandoned, is today a treasure of relatively unpolluted air, cooler temperatures and quiet serenity. Located on the sprawling grounds of the Forestry Research Institute Malaysia at Kepong, 15km from the city is the FRIM. The arboretum was established in 1952 with the objective of collecting and displaying the different varieties of tree species found in the country. Frim also serves to educate the public on Malaysia's rich forest heritage and exhibits the different species of wood, their use and products. Guided tours are available by prior appointment.
