A large part of our cultural legacy of the last 100 years is in the form of audiovisual recordings (sound and moving images). Audio-visual technology had developed gradually in sophistication, even as its use has become more widespread, especially in educational establishments, business presentations, entertainment industry and other areas. Audio-visual materials are of special importance as they appeal directly to the senses, and their impact cuts through barriers such as age, language and levels of literacy. These materials, when they have historical content, will be the best teachers of our history. Their universality in terms of the wide range of users enhances their value as archival materials. Their relevance will not diminish with time. Therefore, it is vitally important for such materials to be closely safeguarded and preserved for long term use by successive generations. |
| |
The preservation of audiovisual archives has become more complex, especially in the tropical regions where heat and humidity pose the main threat. Therefore, the National Archives of Malaysia in collaboration with the Southeast Asia Regional Branch of the International Council on Archives (SARBICA) proposes to organize a seminar on Issues and Challenges in Preserving Audiovisual Archives in the Tropical Region. |
|
It is hoped that through presentations and discussions, the seminar will be able to provide solutions to problems relating to the preservation, revival and accessibility of audiovisual archives. |
|
The Seminar will also present the opportunity to network, exchange experiences and gain familiarity with future trends in the area of preservation, access and dissemination of audiovisual archives. |
| |
