The Proclamation of Independence Memorial

The Declaration of Independence Memorial was officially opened by Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj on August 31, 1985. The establishment of this memorial is to commemorate and honor the contributions and sacrifices of the freedom fighters who liberated the country from successive colonial rulers. The struggle, which began as early as 1511, lasted 446 years and culminated in the declaration of independence on August 31, 1957. This memorial evokes the history of the independence struggle by displaying various materials such as documents, photographs, souvenirs, newspaper clippings, official attire, pens, keris (traditional Malay dagger), seals, and ballot boxes.
The exhibition materials are displayed according to specific sectors to facilitate visitors in understanding the twists and turns of the country's independence struggle. These sectors include the Introduction and Malay Sovereignty, Facing Foreign Powers Challenges, Rise of National Spirit, Opposition to the Malayan Union, United Malay National Organization, Confronting the Communist Movement, Towards Independence, Independence, Constitutional Monarchy, Head of State, States and Governments, and the Formation of Malaysia. There are also cars used during the 1957 Independence Day parade and two armored cars used during the Emergency period displayed outside the memorial building.
In addition to the exhibition materials, visitors can also observe the unique features of this memorial building, which showcases a blend of local and British architectural styles. Originally, this building was the Malacca Club, constructed in 1911. It is located directly opposite the Padang Banda Hilir Melaka, where Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra declared the independence date upon the return of the Independence Delegation from London. The event on February 20, 1956, is a significant episode in the history of the country's struggle for independence.
