HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The National Archives of Malaysia, Johor Branch, was established on 1 May 1967. Initially known as the State Archives Office of Johor, it was located in the Sultan Ibrahim Building in Bukit Timbalan, Johor Bahru, Johor. It was the first branch office of the National Archives established in Malaysia. On 1 May 1972, the office was renamed as the National Archives Department of Malaysia, Southern Branch. On 1 January 1988, its name was changed to the National Archives of Malaysia, Johor/Melaka Branch. From 15 July 2004, the department was once again renamed as the National Archives of Malaysia, Johor Branch. Effective 1 February 2009, the National Archives of Malaysia, Johor Branch, was also known as the National Archives of Malaysia, Johor/Negeri Sembilan/Melaka Branch. This means that the branch office administers three states in southern Peninsular Malaysia: Johor, Negeri Sembilan, and Melaka. The National Archives of Malaysia, Johor/Negeri Sembilan/Melaka Branch, is currently located in the Federal Building on Jalan Ayer Molek, Johor Bahru, since 14 May 1979. The department also has a branch office in Melaka, located in the World Youth Foundation Building in Ayer Keroh, Melaka.

To lead in records management and archives administration inclusively.

MISSION

Empowering records management in the public sector and archives administration through smart partnerships and efficient and effective utilization of information and communication technologies in the interests of society and the country.

OBJECTIVE

  • Improve efficiency and awareness of civil servants with regard to Record Management through the enforcement of the National Archives Act 2003 (Act 629) to ensure that records are managed in a systematic and cost-effective according to the standards set.
  • Acquiring archival material with eternal value, save and preservedin accordance with the principles and standards set as a reference and national heritage.
  • Communalizing archival materials through advocacy programs to enhance the appreciation of the history of the country towards the establishment of the identity of Malaysians.

FUNCTION

  • To provide advisory service in relation to a systematic, efficient and economical record management for the state/federal public office in the entire state of Johor/Negeri Sembilan/Melaka.
  • To trace, acquire and keep all types of records and documents which has national and historical value for permanent storage in the National Archives of Malaysia, Johor/Negeri Sembilan/Melaka  Branch in which it serves as a custodian to the archives records from state/federal public office in the entire state of Johor/Negeri Sembilan/Melaka.
  • To process records that has been transferred by state/federal public office in the entire state of Johor/Negeri Sembilan/Melaka for permanent storage in the National Archives of Malaysia, Johor/Negeri Sembilan/Melaka Branch
  • To carry out records conservation activities under the care of National Archives of Malaysia, Johor/Negeri Sembilan/Melaka Branch as well as to monitor collection materials are in good and perfect conditions.
  • To provide reference and research service to the public, students from institute of higher learning as well as government departments and agencies.
  • To carry out expansion and educational archives activities in the effort to disseminate national heritage treasury collections under storage and custodian of the National Archives of Malaysia,  Johor/Negeri Sembilan/Melaka Branch.
