Independence House
The exhibition of Rumah Merdeka is also enhanced with the installation of audio-visuals, providing more information to visitors.
Originally, the site of this house was owned by Che Manjalara, the mother of YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, who is celebrated as the Father of Independence and Father of Malaysia. The land was later gifted to Tunku. During the Japanese Occupation in 1942, Tunku built a wooden house on this land, known as Rumah Jalan Baru. In 1953, Tunku prepared a new site for his residence, where he elevated the wooden house, known as Rumah Jalan Baru, to become the upper floor of the new house.
In 1954, Tunku named this house Rumah Merdeka, on the advice of his friends such as En Senu Abdul Rahman, En Mohd. Khir Johari, and Tan Cheng Lock. The construction cost of Rumah Merdeka was estimated at RM 20,000. In the General Elections of 1955, 1959, 1964, and 1969, this house served as a place for Tunku to plan political strategies. Additionally, Tunku spent much of his leisure time engaging in writing activities. Among them, Tunku prepared scripts for films such as Raja Bersiong and Mahsuri.
On May 27, 1966, the "Misi Muhibbah" from Jakarta, consisting of 20 military officers led by Rear Admiral O.B Sjaaf, negotiated with Tunku at this house regarding the Confrontation issue. The effort to end the Malaysia-Indonesia Confrontation was successful on June 7, 1966, with Malaysia represented by Tun Razak Hussein and Indonesia by Adam Malik.
